[ at request, void help him understand why he's doing this. this is the most talking he's done in six months. feel special, Fiona. ]
from: attano.corvo@cdc.org
They call it electricity here, and most seem used to it. But I had never seen it until I turned sixteen. At the time, I thought someone had caught a star and captured it in glass, it was such a marvel to all who saw it then.
But it comes from the bellies of whales, that light. From their oil. I think perhaps, it is cruel what happens to them now. But when I was young -- past fourteen I think, I had not been in the army and aboard ships in my duties for more than two, we were set to guarding a merchant whaling ship from pirates.
There is not much to do on ships, those long months at sea. You spend hours, looking into the water that does not seem to end. Land becomes beautiful in a way you cannot imagine until you've forgotten what it feels like to stand on solid ground.
-- But. That's... we caught a whale, with them. They let us because we had nothing to do. I had never seen something so big. It's eye was larger than my head. It watched me, and it's great mind knew me, I think. It dragged us, to catch it, dragged a whole ship hulking as it was, and we had to spear it over and over again before we pulled it on deck. We had heard it's singing the night before. Whales sing so loud that through the hull, it made your teeth rattle and your bones ache.
There was something to killing that which is so great, I suppose, at the time. I was up to my elbow in it's blood and oil as we gutted the beast. It's oil is not like other creatures. It is bright blue, and glows like the lights here do. It was a waste, but there was something to being slathered in the glory of killing such a thing, as if it made us more the men for doing so.
Wrong, perhaps, but it is a victory not quite like anything else, I think.
[ Sometime after their 12 hours is up and all the briefing is over and done with, and then some more hours after that, Jean finally stops his mental BSoDing. So it's about time to check in on a couple of his fellow Blues—particularly Fiona, because she doesn't quite seem the cold, murderous type. ]
[ Adrien was not given to apologies. Ask Arie. He was crap at them.
But he's had a couple of days to think over his actions the night of the mess rover party. Think over his actions, consider that Fiona probably deserved a better explanation or at least an attempt on his part to reopen communication channels.
So ... here he was ... manning up to attempt a conversation meant to lead to an apology. ]
FROM: md.arbuckal.adrien@cdc.org
Fiona?
[ Wait a moment ... damn, no response. She must still be pissed. ]
FROM: md.arbuckal.adrien@cdc.org
I just was hoping we could talk.
[ This time it goes a half hour before the next ping. ]
FROM: kenobi.obiwan@cdc.org Well, that and I was wondering if you wouldn't mind a conversation as well. If you've the time, at some point in the morning? Questions tend to be better with company.
Do they have poetry where you come from in... Chicago? Did I write that correctly?
I remembered to listen to the songs you gave me. I like the one named after Watchtowers, by the man Clapton? It is ... pleasant.
from: attano.corvo@cdc.org
We have a watchtower, at the mouth of the Wrenhaven. Sorry -- the river, the Wrenhaven river. It used to be a fortress, built in the time of my Empress's father after a rebellion to his reign. I hear tell there's a lighthouse on it now, but I have not seen it.
He was a great builder, Emperor Euhorn.
It is called Kingsparrow Island. My Empress sought to build also, a bridge instead of anything military. She called it after her family, naturally I suppose for being ruler, Kaldwin's Bridge.
It will be beautiful when it is done, I should think. More or less for the blood split in it's creation, I do not know.
from: attano.corvo@cdc.org
Selena is... sprawling, and it is far cleaner than I am used to. For a city at least. It is pleasant, I am enjoying myself. The swimming is nicer than when it's done in the middle of winter. But I think I would enjoy it either way.
from: attano.corvo@cdc.org
I obtained one the dolls from the tour, I should like your opinion about it? I do not know if it would be appropriate for a child or not.
